Rovio, the developer behind the popular Angry Birds series, is currently undergoing an internal team restructuring. The move follows the underperformance of its latest title, Angry Birds Dream Blast, which failed to meet the company’s expectations.

As part of this adjustment, 36 employees were laid off this week, including several senior team members who had been working on Angry Birds Dream Blast. A Rovio spokesperson confirmed that the restructuring aims to enhance production efficiency and deepen the company’s integration with SEGA.

> “No projects have been canceled, but it’s true that Angry Birds Dream Blast did not achieve the results we had hoped for,” the spokesperson explained. “This fall, we reorganized our teams in response to that performance, with the goal of becoming more agile, market-driven, and focused on developing and iterating new game ideas more effectively.”

The company stated that it is establishing new business units, realigning its studios, and reassigning certain game projects. Rovio’s Puzzle Studio in Finland will now concentrate on a smaller number of titles, some of which will transition into independent business units. Meanwhile, the Barcelona studio will take on a greater number of projects than before.

Rovio is also revamping its management structure to better align with its status as a privately held company and to strengthen ties with SEGA. The company’s CEO is reportedly spending more time across Rovio’s offices and SEGA’s European headquarters. These organizational shifts have resulted in new leadership roles, changes to existing positions, and ultimately, the layoff of 36 employees in total.
